How can we help?

Step-by-step guides for everything in BalanceUp, quick fixes for common issues, and a direct line to us when you need it.

Guides

Getting started

  1. 1Install BalanceUp and enter your email address. We send a 6-digit one-time code (OTP) to it.
  2. 2Enter the code, then add your full name, mobile number and a 6-digit login PIN. Or continue with Google or Facebook and complete the same details.
  3. 3Pick your global currency in Settings if it isn’t the one you use most.
  4. 4Create your first Account (for a shop, vendor or person) or your first Group (for a trip, flat or event).

Recording expenses and Due in an Account

  1. 1Open Accounts and tap Create account. Give it a name and, optionally, a cover and a currency.
  2. 2Open the account and tap Add expense. Enter the total, choose Full (paid in full) or Advance (enter what you paid now), pick a category and date, and add a note if you like.
  3. 3Anything unpaid appears in the Due tab. Tap an entry and choose Full Pay to clear it, or Part Pay to record a partial payment with its date.
  4. 4Every payment shows in the entry’s history and in the Transactions tab. To make an account read-only when you’re done with it, close it from its menu.

Creating a group and adding people

  1. 1Go to Groups and tap Create group. Add a name, date, budget and cover — you become the group admin.
  2. 2Open the group’s Members tab and tap Add member. Search by email, mobile number or name and send an invitation; the person joins once they accept it in their Requests tab.
  3. 3For someone without BalanceUp, tap Add guest and enter their name (email and mobile are optional).
  4. 4In Settings, choose who can add expenses, invite members, close and delete the group.

Adding and splitting a group expense

  1. 1In the group, tap Add expense and enter the amount, category, date and an optional note.
  2. 2Choose who paid and who shares the expense — members and guests are both available.
  3. 3Pick Equal to divide it evenly (to the paisa), or Exact to type each person’s share; Exact can only be saved when the shares add up to the amount.
  4. 4Tap an expense to view its split. Its creator or a group admin can edit or delete it while the group is active.

Settling up and closing a group

  1. 1Open the group and tap Settlement Summary to see what everyone paid, owes and their net balance.
  2. 2Follow the suggested transfers and pay each other outside the app — BalanceUp never moves money.
  3. 3When everyone is settled, an admin (or any member, if the group allows it) goes to Settings → Close group and confirms. The group becomes read-only.
  4. 4A closed group can later be deleted by those with permission. Closing and deleting need an internet connection.

Troubleshooting

I didn’t receive the one-time code (OTP)

Check your spam or promotions folder and make sure the email address is spelled correctly. Codes expire after a short time and can be resent after a brief cooldown — request a new one from the same screen. Only the latest code works.

I’m locked out after entering the wrong PIN

For your security, repeated wrong PINs are temporarily blocked. Wait a few minutes and try again, or use Forgot PIN to set a new one with a code sent to your email.

The app says I’m offline or has unsynced changes

Your changes are safe on your phone. BalanceUp syncs automatically when the connection returns; you can also pull down on a list to sync right away. If the banner shows a sync error, tap retry.

An offline change “couldn’t be saved”

Shared data may have changed while you were offline — for example the group was closed, someone removed you, or the admin limited who can add expenses. BalanceUp restores the correct version and lists the reason in the banner. Tap Details to read it, then dismiss.

My cover photo didn’t upload

Photos picked offline upload after the account or group has synced. If a photo is too large or unreadable, BalanceUp reports it in the sync banner — pick a smaller photo or one from the cover gallery.

I’m not getting notifications

Check that notifications are allowed for BalanceUp in your phone’s settings, and that the type you expect is switched on in Profile → All settings → Notification preferences.

I can’t add an expense to a group

The group may be closed, or its admin may allow only admins to add expenses. Check the group’s Settings tab, or ask the group admin.

A person doesn’t appear in the Paid by or Participants list

Only active members and guests can be chosen. An invited person appears after they accept the invitation; a removed member can’t be added to new expenses.
