The basics
What is BalanceUp?
BalanceUp is a mobile app for tracking personal and shared expenses. Accounts are private ledgers you keep for a shop, vendor or person, with Due tracking. Groups are shared spaces for trips, flats and events where expenses are split between people and BalanceUp shows who owes whom.
Does BalanceUp move money or process payments?
No. BalanceUp never transfers money, never processes payments and never asks for card or bank details. It only records and calculates. When you record a Full Pay or Part Pay, or settle up in a group, you are noting a payment that happened outside the app — by cash, UPI, bank transfer or any other way you choose.
Which devices does BalanceUp work on?
BalanceUp is built for Android phones and iPhones. Your data is stored on our servers, so you can sign in on another phone and pick up where you left off.
Do I need an internet connection?
Only for some things. Your accounts and groups are kept on your phone, so you can view them, add and edit expenses, record payments and create new accounts or groups offline. Changes sync automatically when you are back online. Signing in, invitations, closing or deleting a group and a few other actions need a connection.
Accounts & Due
What is an Account in BalanceUp?
An Account is a personal ledger for one counterparty — for example your grocery store, milkman, tailor or a friend. It belongs only to you; nobody else can see it or be invited into it.
What is the difference between Full and Advance?
Full means you paid the whole amount at once, so nothing is due. Advance means you paid part of it up front: enter the advance amount and BalanceUp records it as the first payment and shows the rest as Due.
How do Full Pay and Part Pay work?
Open the Due tab of an account and tap an entry. Full Pay records one payment for the entire remaining Due. Part Pay lets you enter any amount up to the remaining Due and the date you paid it. The Due goes down by exactly that amount and the payment appears in the entry's history.
Can I edit an entry after I’ve made payments on it?
Yes — you can change the amount, category, note and date. The new total can’t be lower than what you have already paid against it, and the Due is recalculated automatically.
What happens when I close an account?
A closed account moves to the Closed tab and becomes read-only: its history stays available, but no new entries or payments can be added.
Groups & splitting
How do I add people to a group?
Open the group, go to Members and tap Add member. Search for registered BalanceUp users by email, mobile number or name and send an invitation — they join when they accept. You can also add a guest by name for someone who doesn’t use BalanceUp.
What is a guest?
A guest is a person without a BalanceUp account whom you add to a group by name, with an optional email or mobile number. Guests can pay for and share expenses, and they appear in the settlement summary like everyone else.
How does the Equal split handle odd amounts?
Amounts are split in paise, and any leftover paisa goes to the first participants in the list, so the shares always add up to the exact total. For example, ₹1,000 split three ways becomes ₹333.34, ₹333.33 and ₹333.33.
When should I use an Exact split?
Use Exact when people owe different amounts — for example when someone ordered more. Enter each person’s share; BalanceUp only lets you save once the shares add up to the expense amount exactly.
Who can add, edit or delete expenses?
The group admin decides who can add expenses: only admins, or all members. An expense can be edited or deleted by the member who added it or by a group admin, while the group is active.
What does closing a group do?
Closing a group records the final settlement summary and makes the group read-only — no new expenses, and existing records can no longer be changed. Closing needs an internet connection so the summary includes everyone’s latest expenses.
Offline & sync
What happens to changes I make offline?
They are saved on your phone straight away and uploaded automatically when you are online again — a banner shows when you have unsynced changes. You don’t need to do anything.
Why was one of my offline changes not saved?
Because shared data can change while you are offline. For example, a group admin may have closed the group or limited who can add expenses. In that case BalanceUp restores the correct version on your phone and shows the reason in a banner, so nothing is lost silently.
What if I sign out with unsynced changes?
BalanceUp tries to upload them first. If you are offline, the sign-out dialog warns you that those changes will be lost, so you can cancel and sign out later.
Your BalanceUp login & security
How do I sign in?
With your registered email or mobile number and your 6-digit login PIN, with a one-time code sent to your email, or by continuing with Google or Facebook. New accounts finish setup by adding a name, mobile number and PIN.
I forgot my PIN. What do I do?
Tap Forgot PIN on the login screen, enter your registered email, and use the one-time code we email you to set a new 6-digit PIN.
Why are some PINs not allowed?
Easy-to-guess PINs such as 123456, 654321, 111111 or 000000, and other sequences or repeated digits, are rejected to protect your account.
How do I delete my BalanceUp account?
In the app, go to Profile → All settings → Delete my account and confirm with your PIN. If you no longer have the app, you can request deletion by email. The Delete Account page explains exactly what is removed and what is kept.
